CFA UK Investment Management Certificate
The Investment Management Certificate (IMC) is administered by the CFA Society of the UK (CFA UK), whose main purpose is to foster and maintain high standards of professional ability and practice in investment analysis, portfolio management and related disciplines. It was introduced in 1994 as the benchmark competency examination for the Investment Management Regulatory Organisation and the Personal Investment Authority for those engaged in discretionary or advisory management of investments. The syllabus was significantly updated in December 2001, when the Financial Services Authority (FSA) became the single regulatory authority for the UK financial services industry, and again in 2007 in the light of changes in the industry. It reflects all changes to relevant laws, regulation and industry practice.
The IMC can be taken as a single examination or the two units that it comprises (Unit 1 – UK Regulation & Markets and Unit 2 – Investment Practice) can be taken separately. The full IMC is assessed through a 210 minute examination containing 167 multiple choice questions (of which 17 are trial questions that do not count towards the candidate’s score). The examination covers all nine topic areas that make up the syllabus. Unit 1 is tested through an examination lasting 85 minutes containing 68 multiple choice questions (of which 8 are trial questions that do not count towards the candidate’s score). Unit 2 is tested through an examination lasting 125 minutes containing 99 multiple choice questions (of which 9 are trial questions that do not count towards the candidate’s score).
Important Announcement
- All candidates should be aware that the IMC will undergo a significant syllabus review in 2010 with live testing on the new version from 1 September 2010. Exams based on the current version 7 syllabus will not be available from this date. Candidates are encouraged to take this into consideration when scheduling their test date.
- Owing to a number of regulatory changes relating to qualifications in the UK, the IMC also will change from a level 3 certificate to a level 4 certificate on 1 September 2010. In order to hold a complete qualification, both Units of the IMC must be passed at either level 3 or level 4; a combination of the two is not possible.
